Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in Austin, TX

Loosen the grip of difficult thoughts. Move toward what matters.

ACT (said as one word, “act”) is an evidence-based approach developed by Steven Hayes. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy helps you stop fighting painful thoughts and feelings and start building a life guided by your values. Feeling better right away isn’t the goal. ACT builds psychological flexibility, so fear, grief or self-doubt stop running the show. We offer ACT in Austin at our North Austin and Westlake offices, and online anywhere in Texas.

Who ACT Can Help

Anxiety that keeps looping

Worry, overthinking, panic, perfectionism. ACT helps you unhook from the thought spiral.

Depression and low motivation

When waiting until you feel like it has stopped working, ACT reconnects you with what matters.

Chronic pain or illness

Learn to carry pain without being defined by it.

Grief and loss

Make room for the pain of loss while still showing up for your life.

Trauma and OCD

Combined with other approaches, ACT reduces avoidance and compulsive patterns.

Life transitions and burnout

Clarify what you value when old scripts no longer fit.

Why People Choose Just Mind

Our client care team listens to what’s going on and matches you with a therapist trained in ACT. A real person does the matching, not an algorithm.

Just Mind is independently owned, and we’re with you until it clicks.

Get Matched With an ACT Therapist

Tell our client care team what’s going on and what you’d like from therapy. A real person reads it and matches you with a therapist trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Most new clients have a first appointment within a few days.

How ACT Works

Defusion

Notice your thoughts as thoughts. “I am not good enough” becomes “I am having the thought that I am not good enough.”

Acceptance

Make room for painful feelings instead of fighting them. Fighting takes more energy than feeling.

Present moment

Come back to now, instead of replaying the past or rehearsing the future.

Self-as-context

The observer part of you is bigger than any single story about who you are.

Values

Clarify what matters most. Think of values as a compass you keep following, more than a goal you finish.

Committed action

Take small, specific steps toward those values, even when it is uncomfortable.

What to Expect

Your first few sessions

Your first few ACT sessions usually start with what brought you in, what you have already tried, and what you want your life to stand for. Your therapist may use metaphors (passengers on the bus, dropping the rope in a tug-of-war with a monster) and short exercises so you can practice defusion and acceptance in the session itself. You will likely leave with one or two small, values-based actions to try between sessions.

How we match you

Tell us what’s going on through our new client form or by phone. A real person on our client care team reads it and matches you with a therapist trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy who fits what you shared.

We see clients in person in North Austin and Westlake and online anywhere in Texas. See rates and insurance for what we take.

Not sure where to start? Our client care team can help you find the right fit.

ACT FAQs

ACT is an evidence-based talk therapy that helps you relate differently to painful thoughts and feelings, so they stop steering your choices. You learn skills like defusion and acceptance, and you use your values to decide where to put your energy.

ACT has research support for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, OCD and stress. It also helps with grief, burnout and big life transitions, and it pairs well with approaches like CBT and EMDR.

Traditional CBT often works on changing the content of a thought. ACT works on your relationship to the thought: you notice it, make room for it, and act on your values anyway. Many of our therapists use both.

It depends on what you are working on. Many people notice a difference within a couple of months of weekly sessions, and your therapist will check in on progress with you along the way.

Yes. We offer ACT online anywhere in Texas, and in person at our North Austin (Spicewood Springs) and Westlake offices.
