Using Your Sana Plan for Therapy

Sana, like other insurers, covers therapy when it treats a diagnosed mental health condition. For most people that means individual therapy with a licensed clinician.

Using insurance also means your therapist will need to give a diagnosis and document treatment around it. For a lot of clients, that diagnosis is accurate and helpful. If you would rather not have one on record, private pay is an option.

Questions to Ask Sana Before Your First Session

Look up your plan on the Sana Benefits member site or call the number on your card. Write down the answers so you have them later:

✓ Does my plan have mental health benefits for outpatient therapy?

✓ Is there a deductible I need to meet first?

✓ Is my plan paired with an HSA?

✓ Are telehealth sessions covered?

Paying for Sessions With a Sana Plan

If your Sana plan comes with an HSA, you can pay your share with your HSA card. We also take cash, check, Visa, Mastercard and Discover.

Your card on file is charged at the end of each session. Cancellations under 24 hours are charged the full session fee, which your insurer will not cover.

The Right Therapist, Not Just an Open Slot

Lasting change in therapy depends on feeling safe and understood. Our client care team takes time to learn what matters to you before matching you with a Sana Benefits therapist from our team.

Many of our clinicians accept Sana, and your match will be someone in network with your plan. If the first therapist is not the right fit, tell us. We follow up after your first session and make switching easy.

Sana Benefits Therapist FAQs

Does Just Mind take Sana Benefits?

Yes. Just Mind Counseling is in network with Sana. Our client care team will match you with a therapist who accepts your plan.

Can I pay my share with an HSA card?

Yes. We accept HSA cards, along with cash, check, Visa, Mastercard and Discover. Check with Sana to confirm your plan includes an HSA.

Do I need a diagnosis to use my Sana plan for therapy?

Yes. Insurance requires a diagnosis to show therapy is medically necessary. If you want therapy without a diagnosis on record, you can choose private pay instead.

Does Sana cover couples therapy at Just Mind?

No. Couples therapy is out of network for every insurance plan we take. Insurance requires a diagnosis code, and because couples therapy treats the relationship rather than one person, there isn’t a diagnosis code that can be assigned. Our rates and insurance page lists self-pay rates.

Do I need a referral to see a Just Mind therapist?

It depends on your plan. HMO plans usually require a referral, and PPO plans usually don’t. If you have questions, call the member services number on the back of your Sana card.

What if my insurance changes to a plan you don’t take?

You can ask your new insurance company for a single case agreement so you can keep seeing your therapist. If it is approved, you pay what you would pay an in-network provider.
