Who the Gottman Method Can Help

Couples who like structure

Gottman is skills-forward. If you want tools to practice between sessions, this fits.

High-conflict couples

Learn to spot and interrupt the Four Horsemen (criticism, contempt, defensiveness, stonewalling) in real time.

Low-conflict but drifting couples

Rebuild Love Maps, fondness and the small moments of turning toward each other.

Premarital and newly engaged couples

The Gottman assessment surfaces strengths and growth areas before small cracks widen.

After infidelity or a major rupture

The Atone, Attune, Attach framework gives you a staged path for repair.

Long-term maintenance

Even strong couples use Gottman work to tend their relationship on purpose.

Why People Choose Just Mind

Our client care team listens to what’s going on and matches you with a therapist trained in the Gottman Method. A real person does the matching, not an algorithm.

Just Mind is independently owned, and we’re with you until it clicks.

Get Matched With a Gottman Therapist

Tell our client care team what’s going on and what you’d like from therapy. A real person reads it and matches you with a therapist trained in the Gottman Method. Most new clients have a first appointment within a few days.

How the Gottman Method Works

The Sound Relationship House

Seven floors: Love Maps, Fondness and Admiration, Turning Toward, the Positive Perspective, Managing Conflict, Making Life Dreams Come True, and Creating Shared Meaning. Weak floors get rebuilt one at a time.

Managing conflict

Separate solvable problems from perpetual ones. Learn soft startups, repair attempts and self-soothing to keep conversations productive.

The Four Horsemen and their antidotes

Catch criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling as they appear, and swap each for its antidote.

Bids for connection

The small moments, a comment about the weather, a sigh, a request to look at something, are where connection gets built. Learn to notice them and turn toward them.

What to Expect

Your first few sessions

Gottman work starts with a thorough assessment: one joint session, then an individual session with each partner, plus online questionnaires you complete between appointments. In a feedback session, your therapist shares what the assessment showed about your strengths and growth areas, and together you set treatment goals. From there, sessions focus on specific skills tied to those goals.

How we match you

Tell us what’s going on through our new client form or by phone. A real person on our client care team reads it and matches you with a therapist trained in the Gottman Method who fits what you shared.

We see clients in person in North Austin and Westlake and online anywhere in Texas. See rates and insurance for what we take.

Not sure where to start? Our client care team can help you find the right fit.

Gottman Method FAQs

The Gottman Method is a couples therapy approach developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman from decades of research on what makes relationships last. It combines a detailed assessment with practical skills for conflict, friendship and shared meaning.

You will have a joint session, an individual session with each partner, and online questionnaires to complete. Then your therapist meets with you both to share what the assessment showed and to set goals together.

Gottman work is designed for couples, so both partners usually attend. If your partner is not ready yet, individual therapy can still help you work on your side of the relationship.
