ADHD Testing Austin: Evaluations for Kids, Teens and Adults

Just Mind offers ADHD testing in Austin for kids, teens and adults who want clear answers and a plan for what comes next. Our ADHD evaluations are part of our psychological assessment services, and they are directed by psychologists who take a neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based approach.

Maybe a teacher brought it up. Maybe you took an online screener late at night and saw yourself in every question. A formal evaluation replaces that guesswork with real data about how your brain works.

Serving Austin Since 2007

A therapist-led, independently owned Austin practice. Our testing is directed by psychologists, and every evaluation happens in person at our North Austin office with Scott Allen, PsyD, who has more than 20 years in neurodiversity assessment.

Why Get an ADHD Evaluation?

A good ADHD evaluation also looks at what else might be going on. Depression, anxiety, PTSD and learning disabilities often show up alongside ADHD, and they can look similar from the outside.

“When a patient comes in suspecting they may have ADHD, I initially explore various areas of their life, including medical history and past traumas, before honing in on attention and focus issues,” says Scott Allen, PsyD, our Director of Neurodiversity Services.

All of our assessments follow the American Psychological Association’s Guidelines for Psychological Assessment and Evaluation. For general background on ADHD symptoms and types, the CDC’s ADHD resource page is a good place to start.

Who ADHD Testing Is For

Children and Teens

For kids, the first signs usually show up at school. New material isn’t sticking. They can’t stay in their seat. Or they’re the one playing alone at recess and getting left off the birthday party list.

Accommodations can help, but schools usually want documentation first. For ADHD testing for kids in Austin, we gather information from parents, teachers and others who know your child well, so the results reflect how they actually function day to day.

Adults

Scott sees two groups of adults. College students often hit a wall in the move away from home, when the structure disappears and the coursework gets harder. Older adults usually slipped through the cracks as kids.

A lot of them found ways to cope early on. Maybe you did most of your homework during class or lunch. Now those old strategies aren’t keeping up with a full workday, a relationship or parenting.

Many adults were told they would grow out of it, or that their symptoms weren’t severe enough to evaluate. An adult ADHD assessment can give you a full picture of your history, and that validation often leads to a kinder view of yourself.

Women and Late-Diagnosed Adults

ADHD research focused on hyperactive boys for decades, so many women and girls grew up without answers. In women, ADHD tends to show up as inattention more than hyperactivity, and it is often masked by people-pleasing and perfectionism.

Many women are not diagnosed until their 30s or 40s, sometimes only after their own child is diagnosed. For a lot of moms it is a relief to learn the overwhelm isn’t just what motherhood feels like. It has a name, and there are strategies built for it.

Why Test With Just Mind?

Led by an experienced psychologist. Scott Allen, PsyD, our Director of Neurodiversity Services, has more than 20 years of experience assessing ADHD and autism.

Built around your questions. We choose measures to answer what you and your family need to know, not a one-size battery.

More than a checklist. Scott turns the executive skills questionnaire into a conversation with you and someone who knows you well. You each rate things like impulse control, working memory and sustained attention, then talk through where your answers differ.

Neurodiversity-affirming. Results focus on how your brain works and what helps, not on what is wrong with you.

A report written for you. It uses plain language, and you get a draft to read before your feedback session.

Care after the report. Our ADHD therapists can pick up where testing leaves off.

What an ADHD Evaluation Includes

Every ADHD evaluation at Just Mind follows the same core structure, shaped around your questions.

Step 1

An initial consultation

We decide what you need and plan which measures to use.

$200 to start

Step 2

A clinical interview

With you and people who know you well, like a parent, partner or teacher, who also fill out rating forms.

Step 3

Measures matched to your questions

Including an executive skills interview on attention, impulse control and working memory.

Step 4

A measure of cognitive functioning

So results reflect how you think and learn, not only what you report.

Step 5

A plain-language report

You get a draft to read before we meet, so you can bring your questions.

Step 6

A feedback session

We walk through the numbers, any diagnosis and what to do next.

Get Started With a $200 Consultation

The consultation is where we decide whether testing is right for you and plan which measures you need.

How Long It Takes and What You Get

How Long ADHD Testing Takes

The assessment battery normally takes 15 to 20 hours to complete. That does not include the intake and feedback sessions, which run 60 to 90 minutes each.

Not all of those hours are spent with you in the room. A good share goes to scoring and writing your report. We can’t give exact hours until we know what questions need answering, and some people need more tests because there is more to sort out. A focused adult ADHD evaluation is often shorter.

You will get a time and cost estimate after your intake session, so you know what to expect before testing starts.

What You Get at the End

  • A plain-language report with your results and recommendations. You get a draft ahead of time so you can come in with questions.
  • A feedback session where we go over the numbers, any diagnosis and what to do next
  • Formal recommendations for school or work accommodations, written so you can take them straight to your school’s support team or your employer
  • Referrals when they would help, like therapy, a medical provider or a dietitian
  • Practical strategies for home and work

The strategies are specific. If you work from home, that might mean keeping separate spaces for work and living, with a short walk outside as the transition between them. It might mean scheduling your hardest tasks for the time of day you focus best.

Self-identifying with ADHD can be valuable, but it usually isn’t enough to get formal accommodations. A thorough evaluation is.

Is your child struggling in school? Testing can show how they learn and which accommodations would help.

ADHD Testing Cost

The cost of an ADHD evaluation depends on your situation and the reason for testing. The first step is a $200 consultation to decide whether testing is right for you. Intake and feedback sessions are billed at the same cost per hour as testing. Testing is prorated by assessment, and current pricing is on our rates page.

Payment plans and sliding scale are available, and you can finance testing through CareCredit, which offers 0% interest options for six or twelve months on assessments. For more on pricing, read why psychological assessments cost what they do.

What Happens After ADHD Testing

A diagnosis is a starting point. Many clients move straight into ADHD counseling, where therapists use CBT, skills training and psychoeducation to build strategies that fit how your brain is wired.

Support That Skips the "Try Harder" Message

If medication is part of the plan, our therapists coordinate with your prescriber so you do not have to manage your own care alone. If you want an approach that skips the “try harder” messaging, look at our neurodiversity-affirming therapy.

Whether you’re 8, 28 or 58, it’s not too late to get answers.

Meet Your Psychologist

Scott Allen, PsyD, conducts our evaluations, from the first interview to the feedback session. Before Just Mind, he led diagnostic services for a multi-state autism organization and trained other psychologists in assessment.

“Independence isn’t about doing everything on your own,” Scott tells the people he works with. “It’s about being able to pull in the right resources when you need them.”

ADHD Testing FAQs

We provide psychological testing for children ages 7 and up, teens and adults.

The assessment battery normally takes 15 to 20 hours to complete, not counting the intake and feedback sessions, which run 60 to 90 minutes each. A focused adult ADHD evaluation is often shorter. You will get an estimate after your intake session.

The consultation is where we decide whether testing is appropriate and plan which measures you need. You get the full cost of the assessment after this first meeting.

All testing is done in person at our North Austin office on Spicewood Springs Road, usually on Tuesdays.

No. If you already take medication, keep taking it through testing. Scott wants to see how you function in your real life right now, not in a setup that strips away what is already working for you.

Yes. If you or your child would do better with a break, softer lighting or headphones, tell our client care team when you schedule. We are glad to consider requests like that as long as they don’t interfere with testing.

Yes. All Just Mind therapists have simple screening instruments validated by the World Health Organization. A formal ADHD assessment is the better choice if you need documentation for school or work, or want a complete view of what is going on.

It depends on what you need. Recognizing yourself in ADHD descriptions can be valuable on its own. A formal evaluation adds data, documentation for accommodations, and the diagnosis needed for medical or medication-based treatment.
