Gina Cantrell-Barnett, LMFT

(She/Her)  |

Counselor:

Adults

Gina works with adults from all walks of life going through life transitions, grief, anxiety, depression, fertility & reproductive issues, self-esteem issues, and relational problems.

As a licensed marriage and family therapist, Gina works with individuals looking to take on a deep exploration of themselves. She believes that her job is to get to know her clients so well, that they in turn know themselves on a deeper level at treatment‘s conclusion. Beyond a psychodynamic approach, Gina utilizes a client- centered focus that may weave in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Systems, and Solution-Focused Therapy where needed. But above all else, her relationship with her client is the main tool.

Gina believes that therapy works best when the client feels heard, understood, and supported, while gently guided to explore the difficulties they have faced in their lives. She predominantly identifies as a psychodynamic therapist which means she starts with the assumption that sources of distress can be complex and often outside immediate awareness. She believes that whatever you feel, think, or do occurs for understandable reasons, often related to habitual ways of perceiving and interacting in the world. In therapy with her, the coping mechanisms that may have served to protect you in the past, will be explored to identify where they may be getting in the way now. Her goal is to help her clients shift not just their thinking but their perception and view of themselves in the world to create a more fulfilling and contented life.

Why Therapy?

As a young adult, I struggled deeply with anxiety and depression, which led to my own personal experience of therapy that has lasted decades. I experienced hypnotherapy, family systems, CBT, couples therapy, and traditional psychoanalysis from the client’s side of the couch. It not only created a vast amount of empathy for the motivations, both conscious and unconscious, that drive people, but also a curiosity that feeds me on a deep level. My career as a therapist feels like a job that I will enjoy forever because every person feels like they hold the most important story that needs to be told.

Professional Motivation

My favorite thing about being a therapist is getting to watch as someone gets to know themselves on a deeper level. I always learn so much from assisting a client tend to their own path, and I’m often inspired to learn and grow in my own life as well. It is a supreme privilege.
