What Aetna Typically Covers for Therapy

Insurance covers therapy when an individual is being treated for a diagnosed mental health condition. For most Aetna members, that means individual counseling for things like anxiety, depression, trauma or ADHD.

Check Your Aetna Benefits Before You Start

Call the member services number on the back of your Aetna card, or log in to your member account at aetna.com. Take notes during the call. Good questions to ask:

✓ What is my copay or coinsurance for outpatient mental health visits?

✓ Do I have a deductible, and how much of it have I met this year?

✓ Is telehealth covered at the same rate as in-person sessions?

✓ Is approval from my primary care physician required?

✓ Is family therapy covered, and under what circumstances?

The primary care question matters most if you have an HMO-style Aetna plan.

Your Out-of-Pocket Costs With Aetna

What you pay per session depends on your plan’s copay, coinsurance and deductible, so we cannot quote a single number here.

We accept cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, Discover and HSA cards. Late cancellations and no-shows under 24 hours are charged the full session fee, and insurance does not pay for missed sessions.

Getting Matched With an Aetna Therapist in Austin

Many of our clinicians accept Aetna, though not every therapist is in network with every plan. When you reach out, a real person on our client care team looks at your goals and preferences, then matches you with an Aetna-accepting therapist who fits.

The team considers things like therapist gender, age, specialties and approach. We follow up after your first session, and if the fit is off, we will help you switch.

Where You Can See Us

You can meet your therapist at our North Austin office on Spicewood Springs Road, at our Westlake office on Bee Caves Road, or through telehealth anywhere in Texas. Appointments are available 7 days a week, including evenings and weekends.

Aetna Therapist Austin FAQs

Is Just Mind in network with Aetna?

Yes. Just Mind Counseling is in network with Aetna. Not every clinician takes every plan, so our client care team confirms that your matched therapist accepts your specific Aetna plan.

Does Aetna cover couples therapy at Just Mind?

No. Couples therapy is out of network for every insurance plan we take. Insurance requires a diagnosis code, and because couples therapy treats the relationship rather than one person, there isn’t a diagnosis code that can be assigned. Our rates and insurance page lists self-pay rates.

What if my Aetna plan is a Medicare plan?

Our providers have opted out of Medicare, so we cannot bill Medicare for services. That includes Aetna Medicare Advantage plans.

Can I use my Aetna plan for telehealth?

Many plans cover telehealth, but rates can differ. Ask Aetna whether video sessions are covered the same as in-person visits. We offer telehealth to clients anywhere in Texas.

Do I need a referral to see a Just Mind therapist?

It depends on your plan. HMO plans usually require a referral, and PPO plans usually don’t. If you have questions, call the member services number on the back of your Aetna card.

What if my insurance changes to a plan you don’t take?

You can ask your new insurance company for a single case agreement so you can keep seeing your therapist. If it is approved, you pay what you would pay an in-network provider.
