Internal Family Systems

What Is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model is a unique approach that views the mind as composed of multiple parts, each with its own perspective and feelings. These parts can be protective, exiled, or wounded. The goal of IFS therapy is to help these parts work together, guided by your true Self, towards healing and wholeness.

How Does IFS Therapy Work?

During IFS Therapy sessions, you will:

  • Identify and connect with different parts of yourself
  • Understand the roles and functions of these parts
  • Develop a compassionate relationship with each part
  • Heal past traumas and wounds affecting your parts
  • Integrate these parts into a cohesive and balanced Self

FAQs About Internal Family Systems Therapy

The self is the leading piece of our “parts” and it helps the pieces to orchestrate and heal. It helps to mediate and to provide empathy through struggle. People often describe the “self” as being the piece that provides guidance to the whole system to better create harmony.

It varies by individual and what’s happened. Typically people do longer term deeper work with IFS and it’s often over a year but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done more rapidly if the client and therapist are both deeply invested in the work and well trained to do the work.

IFS is often used as a part of trauma resolution. Sometimes it is used with other forms of therapy like EMDR or Somatic Experiencing, but helps to give structure to an individual’s experience of life and a new framework and conceptualization for moving through it.
