Mike Rosenthal, LMSW | Therapist for Teen Guys in Austin | Just Mind

(He/Him)  |

Counselor:

Adults, Families, Parents, Teens

Mike offers a unique perspective on counseling. He is a career changer and parent with a deep dedication to serving young people, parents, and whole families. He also has extensive interest and expertise in issues impacting adolescent males and young men, an often overlooked and under-treated population. He offers unique, creative, and adaptive treatment approaches that address neurological, developmental, and social factors impacting clients.

Mike has focused his study, research, and practice on adolescents and young adults, offering assistance with issues related to neurodiversity (ADHD and autism), anxiety, depression, identity and self-esteem, grief and loss, anger and aggression, defiance, and other challenging behavior. Where possible, Mike makes every attempt to work with parents and families to address challenges holistically. Mike also has extensive training and experience with diverse youth and clients facing challenges related to race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, and disabilities.

From his additional work as a high school counselor, Mike is entirely and passionately immersed in work with adolescents and families. His style is relatable, humble, fun, funny, engaging, compassionate, and, perhaps most importantly, without judgement. Informed by his indispensable experience as a parent and his own challenges as a young person, he is driven by an unrelenting desire to be a resource for others. As such, Mike is well-versed in evidence-based, trauma-informed methods, combining attachment and neurodevelopmental theory with behavioral and mindfulness-based methods to address a wide range of common adolescent and family issues. At the core of Mike’s approach is building a trusting relationship, perhaps the most essential aspect of successful therapy with young people.

Mike is supervised by Andrea G. Hale, LCSW-S.

Why Therapy?

I have a great passion for working with adolescents. It is a unique, wondrous, pivotal, and potentially challenging developmental stage. Perhaps at the very root of the matter, however, is a desire to be the skilled, unconditionally accepting support I wish I had during these critical years.

Professional Motivation

My love of the field and my job is boundless. I’m a helper by nature. Thus, my greatest joy is leveraging my own life experience and training to assist kids, families, and young adults in achieving personal goals. There is no greater satisfaction than being a resource for families and young people seeking answers. As a natural extrovert, I thrive on interaction. I thoroughly enjoy engaging with people and have a deep curiosity in other’s stories. I also have an endless fascination with human, neurological, and psychological development. My job, as it were, is undoubtedly a labor a love.

Education

I received my bachelor’s in journalism from the University of New Hampshire. After many years as a communications professional, I returned to the University of Texas at Austin, where I earned my master’s in social work.

Hobbies

I’m a runner, a meditator, a singer and songwriter, a birder, and pickle baller, and a proud dad.

Previous Occupations

As a career changer, I’ve had many chapters. I began as newspaper reporter right out of college. I was a professional singer-songwriter for many years. I was an advertising writer for many years. As a mental health professional, I’ve focused entirely on serving families and adolescents, both in the school setting and in the home.
