Keith Cantrell, LPC

(He/Him)  |

Counselor:

Adults, Teens

Keith has a passion for working with adolescents and adults using an integrative approach that is tailored specifically to the client’s needs and current challenges. He recognizes that clients are experts on themselves and partners with them to create strategies that resonate with who they are and what makes sense to them. He believes that creating an environment that is respectful of client autonomy and agency in every step of the therapeutic process is critical to facilitating change.

Keith’s therapeutic style is warm, authentic, compassionate, fun, and non-judgmental. As a self-identified geek, he loves incorporating aspects of geek culture into therapeutic work if it makes sense for the client. He believes that everyone is capable of change and exploring what that means for each client is one of the most important aspects of his work. He uses humor and metaphors in session and is a very straight forward, authentic therapist that provides a safe space for his clients to be authentically themselves.

Keith focuses on issues such as life transitions, grief and loss, sexuality, LGBTQIA+ issues, trauma, and relationship challenges. Keith is EMDR trained and pulls from multiple theoretical orientations in his work, often using techniques from cognitive-behavioral (CBT), Mindfulness, Person Centered, and ACT therapy. He is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and approaches his work from a sex positive and kink/poly aware perspective.

Why Therapy?

I wanted to become a therapist when I graduated with my undergraduate degree, but found myself starting a successful sales and marketing career that I stayed in for almost 20 years. I decided to leave that career and become a therapist because I wanted to work with people directly in a different and more impactful way. Doing so has allowed me to live a more authentic life in a field that makes me happy.

Professional Motivation

I love helping clients navigate the delicate balance that exists between exploration, change, and acceptance. It can be uncomfortable, but partnering with clients so they don’t have to face it alone is amazing to me.

Education

Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from St. Edward’s University

Hobbies

I consider myself a geek and I grew up reading comics, wanting to boldly go where no one has gone before, and being fascinated by a galaxy far, far away. You will often find me immersed in something from one of these worlds with a cup of coffee or tea in my hand. I am a huge animal person and enjoy spending time with my dogs, my cat, and the fish and corals in my saltwater tank at home.

Previous Occupations

I have spent most of my professional career working in sales, marketing, and corporate training. Those jobs allowed me to travel all around the country meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures.
