Andrea Oberhauser, LPC Associate

(She/Her)  |

Counselor:

Adults, Couples

Andrea´s relational and attachment focus centers on creating a safe, welcoming space where hard things can be talked about. Andrea supports individuals and couples to curiously question their definition of the problem and look closely at what is causing distress. She firmly believes that with the strength of the therapeutic relationship, therapy can be a powerful tool through which couples and individuals create the conditions for a more meaningful life.

As a couples therapist, Andrea uses Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to collaborate with both partners to be able to understand their patterns and find practical ways to engage in deeper connection with one another. Through this lens, couples will work towards understanding how and why they get to feeling disconnected, including looking at early attachment figures, trauma, and shame. Andrea is experienced in working with bi-cultural couples, collaborating with partners to navigate the beauty and difficulties of intersecting identities. With couples, Andrea is trained to work with trust-related issues, premarital counseling, nontraditional relationships, difficulties in communication and overall relationship well-being.

Andrea works from a psychodynamic and relational frame, emphasizing the importance of the therapeutic relationship as well as early attachment figures. Having grown up in four different countries herself, Andrea is deeply attuned to how our environment plays a role in shaping who we are as individuals and how we interact within a system. With individuals, Andrea works with clients going through life-transitions, grief, relationship issues, anxiety, gender identitydepression, self-esteem, and body-image. In her work with children and families, Andrea looks closely at how the family system is working and how each family member holds a part in what seems to be causing concern. Andrea is warm, deeply caring, and works with the assumption that going to therapy is hard but can be an extremely rewarding process. She works in both English and Spanish.

Andrea is supervised by Kimberley Mead, LPC-S.

Why Therapy?

Therapy became a safe place for me from an early age. The relationships with my therapists have helped me understand how I operate in this world. I have always been deeply interested in the beautiful and complicated nature of human relationships so being a therapist was the only thing I ever wished to be.

Professional Motivation

I love seeing people be able to have more meaningful and fulfilling connections with the people around them. It is amazing when I get to witness people come to a new understanding of their hardships and take an active part in creating the life they want.

Education

I majored in psychology in Mexico City. I have a Masters in Mental Health Counseling from New York University (NYU).

Hobbies

Cooking, eating, and grocery shopping are my favorite things to do! I spend my free time connecting with family members abroad and walking with my husband and dog.

Previous Occupations

Before becoming a therapist, I was an Early Intervention provider for children with developmental disabilities. I then worked for several years as a kindergarten teacher. Before moving to Austin, I was a therapist in a private practice in New York City, where I saw couples, individuals, and children.
