Alyssa Van Lopik, LCSW

(She/Her)  |

Counselor:

Adults, Teens

Alyssa is grounded in a client centered approach. Alyssa views clients as the experts on their lives and supports them in determining the direction and depth that therapy takes. Through a strengths-based and solution-focused lens, Alyssa draws on multiple treatment modalities to guide clients in identifying their strengths and goals.

Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Alyssa assists clients in exploring relationships among thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to aid in discovering dysfunctional thought patterns leading to destructive behaviors and beliefs. Using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Alyssa supports clients through developing skills: mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation with the goal of moving clients towards a life involving the capacity for experiencing joy and freedom. She is also trained in EMDR Therapy and uses this approach to support clients in trauma resolution.

Alyssa works with adults, emerging adults and teens experiencing symptoms associated with trauma, depression, anxiety/stress, substance use, life transitions, relationship challenges, and the desire for self exploration. She aims to create a safe and welcoming environment for her clients to practice vulnerability and move towards their goals.

Why Therapy?

Mental illness runs in my family and I have seen family members (including myself) affected by the struggles associated with mental health. I have been fortunate to work with several therapists who have helped myself and family members overcome barriers related to mental health. From these experiences, I grew a passion to support others in their journey to self discovery and recovery.

Professional Motivation

I am passionate about empowering others to identify and develop the tools to help them lead successful, happy and fulfilling lives.

Education

University of Michigan – BA in Psychology; Loyola University Chicago – Master of Social Work

Hobbies

When I am not working, I can be found cooking new recipes in the kitchen, chasing around my sweet, silly 2-year old daughter, walking my goofy Bernedoodle and spending quality time with my husband and friends.

Previous Occupations

Case Manager at inpatient psych hospital, group therapist in PHP/IOP programs for adolescents, clinical manager and graduate associate supervisor, and business development manager at a recruiting agency.
