Sarah Dunlap, PhD, LMFT
Counselor: Adults, Couples
Sarah envisions therapy as a time for clients to regroup, reflect, and tackle their issues in a safe, calm, and non-judgmental environment. Her clients find her to be an empathetic listener with a warm but direct approach, and also someone they can laugh with and trust. She not only focuses on long-term goals for therapy, but also what clients need in the moment. Sarah practices from a systems-based, collaborative stance and draws on numerous different therapeutic theories. She uses modalities such as Gottman method couples therapy, CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), solution-focused therapy, and IFS (internal family systems) in her work.
Sarah has practiced in numerous environments including private practice, nonprofits, elementary schools, boarding schools, and telehealth. She enjoys work with individuals, families, and couples who present with problems ranging from marriage/relationship issues, pre-marital concerns, parenting conflict, LGBTQI+ identity struggles, and those that are kink-curious. Most recently her clinical time has been spent with couples who experience “high-conflict” and those that are hoping to take their relationships to the “next level” through transitions such as engagement, marriage, or even creating more sexual compatibility.
Areas of Specialty
M.A. and PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisiana at Monroe
Being a part of the moment people realize they are resilient, creative, indominable beings. Whether it’s learning a new skills set, finding new ways to communicate, or even choosing to leave an unhealthy relationship, witnessing people have those “ah-ha!” moments and venture into a more hopeful time in their life just gives me joy.
I love having an opportunity to witness peoples stories. To have a brief glimpse (and maybe a touch of influence) into someone diverging from their current path onto one that makes them happier and healthier is very fulfilling.
I am a voracious reader of all things sci-fi and fantasy, and can usually be found curled up with a fluffy blanket, my dog, and a good old fashioned book. I also really enjoy playing MMOs and tabletop games with friends and family. Big Nerd Energy over here!
I have worked in the mental health field my entire adult life. I began my career in a state run facility for youth as a therapist’s assistant. During graduate school I worked with young adults in transitional living as well as a non-profit respite shelter for families working with CPS. After graduate school I worked for a boarding school where I worked with teens and their families.
