Kris Downing, LCSW, SEP

(She/Her) | Counselor: Adults, Children, Parenting

Kris Downing brings 25 years experience as a clinical social worker and 15 years practicing Somatic Experiencing and offering LCSW Supervision. She works primarily with adults and elementary aged children, and she has extensive training in play therapy, sandtray therapy, and EFT Tapping. Her relational approach combines somatic work with expressive and talk based therapies to promote deeper healing. She is the adoptive mother of two neurodivergent sons with ADHD and has learned a wealth of humility about parenting!

Kris helps strengthen a client’s awareness of their internal resources and the flow of communication between their mind and body. She approaches each person’s experience with curiosity and care, following and gently guiding them to find more balance, resilience, compassion and trust in their own wisdom and a greater felt sense of safety.

In her playful work with kids, Kris appreciates that play is how children communicate their feelings and their needs. She finds creative ways to attune to and nurture the child’s emotional and social development. Kris collaborates with parents to enhance the child’s healthy attachment and self-efficacy. She helps caregivers advocate for school accommodations and improved parent-teacher-child communication. Kris values the parent’s perspective and relies on them as partners in their child’s healing.

Why Therapy?

I love to help people learn to stay curious, rather than critical, and trust their intuition. We all deserve to feel seen and understood and have someone witness and celebrate our growth.

Professional Motivation

I believe we have the resources within us to be more joyful. I see my role as a guide to help individuals slow down, attune to the subtle cues of their mind and body and make sense of their meaning.

I love to be outdoors; camping, hiking, being in the trees watching birds and hunting rocks. I enjoy crafts and quilting, collecting children’s books, Zumba dancing, reading great novels and playing with our Aussiedoodles.

Previous Occupations

Kris has been a clinician in public schools and community non-profit mental health programs. She was the Clinical Supervisor and Professional Development Coordinator for Communities In Schools and has worked with the YWCA, TNOYS and Austin ISD. She was a founding member of the PEAKS Adventure, an outdoor therapeutic recreation camp for youth and youth workers across the state of Texas.
