Kelly McGettigan, LPC Intern

Kelly Mcgettigan, LPC Associate

Counselor: Teens, aDults

Kelly’s approach to counseling is person-centered and grounded in the science of interpersonal neurobiology and attachment theory. She works from the perspective that the relationship between therapist and client can offer the safety needed to decrease emotional distress, collaboratively explore concerns, and develop new relational patterns. She sees adolescents and adults who are experiencing relationship challenges, life transitions, anxiety, depression, grief, and physical health issues, as well as individuals wanting to cultivate more meaning, clarity, and confidence. In addition to talk therapy, she uses mindfulness practices, creative arts, and sandtray with clients who are interested in learning about themselves through experiential therapies. Kelly has completed Level One of Gottman training and incorporates aspects of Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy (PACT) and Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) in her work.

Kelly is supervised by Seja Rachael, LPC-S.

Areas of Specialty

Educational Background

Bachelor of Science in Youth, Adult & Family Services from Purdue University; Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Texas State University.

Why Therapy?

Working with clients one on one was always the most energizing and interesting part of my previous jobs. I love that counseling incorporates relationships, creativity, and research and there is always more to learn. I decided to become a therapist after experiencing the value of therapy for myself, as a former Flatwater Foundation client.

Professional Motivation

Connecting with clients to support new experiences, new brain pathways, and new ways of being in relationships. Offering clients a place to be uncensored and accepted.

Time with family and friends. Viewing and making art, estate sales, yoga, libraries, organizing closets.

Previous Occupations

Before counseling, I worked in crisis intervention, provided domestic violence services, coordinated cancer programs, and taught art in community settings.
