Duff Stoneson, LPC Associate
Duff’s approach to counseling is built upon deep belief that the therapeutic relationship itself is a powerful vehicle for change. Our minds, hearts, and guts are deeply intuitive tools that gauge safety and connection in each moment, and when those basic needs are disrupted it can impact our lives in challenging and persistent ways. Finding a therapist who can hold a warm, inviting space for processing opens doors to incredible insight and growth. Duff’s work centers the agency and wisdom of his clients, while acknowledging the impacts of cultural conditioning, systemic injustice, and existential issues. His therapeutic relationships are characterized by warmth, safety, metaphor, and humor that create space for deep dives into meaningful, challenging work.
Duff has completed postgraduate training exploring the intersections of spirituality and social justice, anti-racist development, therapeutic presence, and integrative breathwork. He is currently enrolled in a year-long intensive study of applied Interpersonal Neurobiology with Bonnie Badenoch, Ph. D., LMFT, and Jo Hadlock-King, LICSW, RCST, LMP.
Supervised by Marshall Lyles, LPC-S.
Areas of Specialty
BA in Psychology, Minor in Philosophy, Texas State; MA in Counseling Psychology, Adams State University
While I’ve always been interested in the human experience, there was about a 15-year gap between my BA and entering a master’s program. During that time I got married and watched my wife’s career as a therapist flourish, while I maintained a successful but unfullfilling series of roles in software project management. As I continued my personal and spiritual development during that time, the desire to do something meaningful became continually more undeniable. Eventually, I circled back around to realizing that this was where I should have been all along.
The opportunity to hold deep, meaningful space for and with people. The sense that I’m contributing something of value to others’ lives.
I’m a musician, so I enjoy playing my instruments (didgeridoo, native american style flute, steel tab drum/tongue drum, percussion) – I do some woodworking also, which is mostly centered around making my own didgeridoos and occasional other wood pieces. I’m an oldschool nerd, too, so I enjoy D&D and video games. I love reading, although most of what I read now is related to my work. Most of my leisure time is tied up in being a dad, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
For the last 10 years or so I worked in the software industry, primarily as a project manager. Prior to that I had a brief stint in business with my father, selling industrial supplies. Currently I do have a parallel practice doing sound healing work, which is something people find interesting.
