Charity cortez, LCSW

Counselor: Adults

Charity welcomes clients to express themselves, heal, and experience their lives with more confidence, vibrancy, and peace. Using the present moment as a foundation for exploration, she encourages clients to experiment with radical acceptance and self-expression within the safety of the therapeutic relationship. She is primarily focused on trauma resolution, self-integration, and self-actualization. Charity lends compassionate support to clients who experience anxiety, depression, grief and loss, shame, unresolved trauma, and existential concerns. Over 10 years of experience with people struggling with complex challenges informs her realistic optimism about the possibilities for growth in therapy and her flexible and creative approach. She draws from attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, EMDR, Internal Family Systems/parts work, and intersectional feminist theory. She is fluent in English and Spanish.

Areas of Specialty

Hobbies

I love to play outside – hiking, swimming, exploring. I love to read poetry, short stories, novels, essays. I listen to music and enjoy a good round of car or kitchen karaoke most days. I grew up garage-saling and still enjoy a good treasure hunt.

Why Therapy?

I’ve always loved language and connecting with all kinds of people. I’m curious and oriented to relationships. I like exploring, and am introspective. I am drawn to complexity. I think these all converged into the beautiful opportunity to become a therapist, where I get to connect with all aspects of the human experience with respect and wonder.

Professional Motivation

There’s such a powerful sense of purpose in being with a person as they come to know and connect with their true nature, their intact humanity, their wonder and vitality. What a thing to witness!

Educational Background

I attended the University of Texas at Austin, where I received both my undergraduate degree in Latin American Studies and my graduate degree in Clinical Social Work.

Previous Occupations

I’ve been a preschool teacher, a salad-dressing maker, a service-industry worker, a research assistant, a care coordinator, a parenting coach… my diverse young adult work and life experience helps me be more understanding and available in my work now as a therapist.
